Live ARTISTS.
Philly bands in Philly, un-Philly bands in Philly, Philly bands out of Philly.

BarcelonaBARCELONA @ Upstage, Phila pa, w/ My Favorite and others (the Pop Prom).  5.28.2k

Having never heard anything from Barcelona but hype and a remix of them by HollAnd on a Darla Treat, I left the Pop Prom impressed with their boy/girl indie pop thing, and with a cool glittery sticker. I wish I could tell you more about them but all I have are these pics, a sticker and a track on a comp. (Not from Philly)

Bardo PondBARDO POND @ Upstage, Phila pa, w/ Lexicon, Ian Nagoski & RH Band.  7.13.2k

Last time I saw them, about six years ago, they nearly put me to sleep opening for Velocity Girl at the Troc. Things are different now, Bardo Pond is on Matador (were they then?), and the more intimate Upstage seemed to work. (From Philly)

Bigger LoversBIGGER LOVERS @ Upstage, Phila pa.  6.15.2k

Singer/songwriter/guitarist/drummer Bret Tobias (ex-Moped, The Lucys) has really not stopped giving to Philly's indie rock scene since I first met him a few year ago at Moped's last show. His latest, the Bigger Lovers, is a feelgood guy band for the mature part of Philly's Khyber-rock scene. (From Philly)

Fist to the DomeFIST TO THE DOME @ Russo's, Mt Holly NJ.   7.22.2k

The Fist (influenced by Radiohead to Wu-Tang to Jackson 5) always pack the house with suburban white chicks then proceed to spit sing-songy hip-hop pop about 40s, blunts and bitches, weighing the pros and cons of one night stands, true love, and just straight wildin' out. True Jersey. (From Philly/NJ)

FlowchartFLOWCHART @ OM Festival, Tweed, Ontario, Canada. 6.17.2k

Flowchart, the international emo-electronic superstars Sean O'neal & Erin Anderson, are both DJs and don't play out as Flowchart too often, let alone in Canada.  So when they asked if I wanted to go, how could I say no? This is the special occasion I bought the digital camera for. (From Philly)

Intergalactic Faerie FunkINTERGALACTIC FAERIE FUNK @ OM Festival, Tweed, Ontario, Canada.  6.17.2k

The Intergalactic Faerie Funk, a Philly band I had never heard of before this, is DJ Mark Hug and friends (some, I know, down w/ 700 club), and this time including John Schenk. They kick groovy danceable electronic so tight you forget it's a live band. Especially on E in the woods in Canada. (From Philly)

John SchenkJOHN SCHENK @ OM Festival, Tweed, Ontario, Canada.  6.17.2k

The man, the myth, the legend, Slipping Into Sublimnity's DJ John Schenk, was one of the many Philly heads up in Tweed for the OM Fest. His ambient electronic sets include Technicolor, Land of the Loops, Flowchart, and much more stuff than I know about. (From Philly)

LexiconLEXICON @ Upstage, Phila pa, w/ Ian Nagoski, RH Band & Bardo Pond.  7.13.2k

Lexicon is Ben Morgan (of John Schenk's Slipping Into Sublimnity @ 700 club) on guitar w/ friends on violin, bass & drums doing Dambuilders-esque noise-pop (to the point of covering a Dambuilders track). Pretty damn good for having been on hiatus for about two years. (From Philly)

MallMALL @ Wild Child, Wilmington de, w/ Tremolo & others.  12.99

Rob & Mike, two Darla-bred electronic anti-rock stars, create chill vibes w/ their mellow, minimal indietronic pop. From illbient ghetto beats to atmospheric sequenced bliss, it's all good. You almost get the feeling the just walked in from burning one outside. (From Philly)

My Favorite.MY FAVORITE @ Upstage, phila pa, w/ Barcelona and others (the Pop Prom).  5.28.2k

Some of My Favorite's random releases are pretty cool. Others are arguable, others I've never heard. But seeing them live makes you see that they're more band than not. One keyboard, boy/girl vocals, guitar, drums, bass. The girls 'voice is really nice. And they kind of remind me of Figurine. (From NYC)

the SwirliesSWIRLIES @ Pi Lam w/ Asteroid #4 and others, Phila pa, 2.2k

I have never ever seen the Swirlies live before. They've done so much in the past seven or so years that I just about thought they were gone. But the noisy Boston guys (w/o Seana, now in Syrup USA) came to Philly for a mad d.i.y. show and busted the twisted noise-pop that influenced so many, from Lenola to Velocity Girl to countless others. (From Boston)

TleilaxuTLEILAXU @ Eden Roc, Phila pa, w/ Imri, MG, more.  7.13.2k

Chris Frank, spinning as DJ Crasta for a few years now, has just recently started doing live sets of original experimental music under his Fuzzybox alter-ego Tleilaxu. I left in the middle of a Bardo Pond show to catch Tleilaxu's must-see precision "abstract beats" w/ ambient and such on top. (From Philly)

Note: The Mall, Swirlies, Barcelona & My Favorite pics are from a Polaroid 660 or whatever. The recent stuff and anything coming is done on a Digital Kodak DC240. No more film. Endless shots. Odd effects. Word.

I have photos going far back of Helium, Syrup USA, Velocity Girl, Lenola, Asteroid #4, Azusa Plane, Moped, Slumber, Bent Leg Fatima, Eltro, the Lucys, Jenhitt, Corm, and more, and unless they're at least a bit relevent to something going on today I probably won't put them up. But if you would like to me to email or snail mail you some email me and I'll see what I can do. Okay, Eltro might be up soon.
